THE
MARK
Ostrium's symbol is not a letter and not a logo built for marketing. It is the configuration of the institution's instrument at midnight, drawn as a mark. The homepage film forms it before the masthead shows it.
THREE STROKES
- The arc
- The final stretch of the clock arc, descending to an instant. Elapsed time, seen at the end of the day where the milestones cluster.
- The line of sight
- The line from the Aperture's opening to 24:00, rising to meet the arc. Observation and measurement.
- The continuation
- The datum carried past midnight into Day Two. The line does not stop at the boundary.
The arc and the line of sight both stop short of the point where they would meet. The instant is left open: the question remains open. Closing the gap would turn the mark into a claim.
WHERE IT COMES FROM
In the film the line of sight is nearly level, because the observatory stands on the horizon. The mark tilts it to 12° so the angle survives at small sizes. That is the only deliberate difference between the instrument and the symbol.
CONSTRUCTION
COLOUR AND MOTION
The mark is one colour: ink on paper, bone on charcoal. It never depends on oxide. The registered version, with an oxide point in the open instant, appears only where the instrument is present: the film's final state and the seal on constitutional documents.
Its only motion is registration: the arc descends, the line of sight rises to meet it, then the line continues, in 720 milliseconds. It plays when the film forms the mark, never as decoration, and not at all with reduced motion.
WHAT IT IS NOT
Not a stylized O, a camera aperture, an orbit or a target. Not a picture of a building: the observatory it comes from is fictional. Not a result: the open instant is the point.
HOW IT WAS CHOSEN
Twenty constructions were drawn in five families: compression, open horizon, recursive instrument, temporal compression, and unknown to reality. Each was tested at 16 pixels, in one colour and blurred. Two independent AI reviewers, not a human panel, compared three finalists without being told a preference, and both chose this one. A later review read an earlier version as "D-", so the arc was shortened to a 70° sweep.

Keep at least a quarter of the mark's height clear on every side. Do not rotate it, close the gap, add strokes, enclose it in a shape, recolour the strokes or set it below 16 pixels.
